Poetry; Reflections of a Favorite Appliance, at a Favorite Loved One's Home
From the mid Fifties through the Early Sixties a special Appliance was fondly remembered around a table one night, which lead to this write.
"The Vault"
It was not as big as Fort Knox
But, at times it seemed to be
As filled; but It did not hold, all that much
Nothing as precious as the Nation’s gold
Though at times; it, was as guarded
As if, it were or did
What was kept within this secluded box?
White and chrome with accents of gold
Stuffed in the basement behind, the bar’s shielding sight
Things kept in the dark;
Where children did not dare to go
At least not alone, or by their selves
Most of the time, it was a magical drink
Kept ice cold and bottled in glass
Sometimes sweets from a far off land
And even lambs, hams, and turkeys
Cookies of every shape and size
Colored eggs, though not by Faberge`
No, but still as golden to us, at least
How could this simple old woman;
Who lived mostly by herself
Amount such fortunes, and
Now a days, I can’t even fill my, Refrigerator
Modest and humble was she, and
This magical box, it sat almost empty
Throughout the year, until some special day
Would come around, and then wham!
Over night it was,magically filled
Even over stuffed, with stuff
As were the cabinets in her old house
Food would lay every where, as well as furs
Minks and leather robes and coats;
People would come from across the sea, too
To see; this hidden box
Tucked away
In her basement
And when they, had all left
Emptied of its contents, it always was
She had given everything, away
But, enduring the rest of the year
Only the Royal Crowns, jewels that they were, to us
And the Golden Beers; our uncles, favorites
They would always magically appear;
Kept there, ice cold and never frozen
In this unnatural, Natural Gas
Ice Box!
